SWING BRIDGE

The Victorian Swing bridge linking Newcastle and Gateshead was completed and designed in 1876 by Lord Armstrong to help trade in the upper reaches of the river Tyne to larger ships. It is 14 metres wide and 171 metres long, using pressurised water to power the hydraulic engines to turn the bridge. The bridge is a scheduled ancient monument: if you are lucky you might catch the engineers testing the original swinging mechanism installed by Lord Armstrong on the first Wednesday of every month at 2pm.

Address:
Bridge St,
Gateshead,
Tyne and Wear,
NE8 2BH.
