SUNDERLAND MUSEUM & WINTER GARDENS

A hidden gem in Sunderland, there are many standard exhibitions and new ones on a regular basis over four floors. The exhibitions are modern and appealing with facts and artefacts including local information and people stories. There is also a lovely library and beautiful inside and outside winter gardens, alongside a treetop walkway and café.

The Winter Gardens, a 21st Century addition to the museum, has over 2,000 plants in the glass rotunda and from the treetop walkway visitors have a bird’s eye view of beautiful Mowbray Park. You can also pay a visit to the Koi Carp.

Holmeside cafe serves hot and cold drinks, cakes, sandwiches and meals. The shop sells books, cards, gifts and souvenirs as well as a good selection of cheaper items for children.

These are the current opening hours, which may change depending on the exhibition. Entrance is via the museum shop off Burdon Road.

Monday to Saturday: 10am - 4pm
Sunday: 12 noon - 4pm

Admission is free for everyone. Some exhibitions may have a charge, so check the website before you go.

Address:
Burdon Road,
Sunderland,
Tyne and Wear,
SR1 1PP.

The Museum and Winter Gardens is on the edge of Mowbray Park in the city centre. It does not have its own dedicated car park. The nearest pay and display car park is at the Civic Centre, approximately 200 metres from the Museum and Winter Gardens entrance, down hill along Burdon Road. Tatham Street open air car park is also close by. The entrance to the museum is approximately a 400 metre walk, past Tavistock Place then either along the North Terrace of the Park or along Borough Road. There are several designated bays for disabled drivers close to the museum entrance on Burdon Road and some on John Street approximately 100 metres away.
